There is no single national sales tax rate lookup — and this site does not offer one. In the United States, sales tax rates are set by each state, and in most states counties, cities, and special districts add their own local rates on top of the state rate.
That is why a ZIP code alone is often not enough. A single ZIP code can cross a city or county line, so two addresses in the same ZIP code can have two different combined rates. For an exact rate, always check by full street address using the official lookup for that state.
Use the table below to go straight to the official rate lookup for your state. Every link goes to the state revenue department, or to the lookup that department officially uses.
Official sales tax rate lookups by state
| State | Official rate lookup |
|---|---|
| Tennessee | Tennessee Sales Tax Jurisdictional and Tax Rate Database |
| Minnesota | Minnesota Sales Tax Rate Calculator |
| Missouri | Missouri Sales and Use Tax Lookup |
| California | California Find a Sales and Use Tax Rate |
| New York | New York Jurisdiction/Rate Lookup by Address (JRLA) |
| Washington | Washington Tax Rate Lookup |
| Illinois | Illinois Tax Rate Finder (MyTax Illinois) |
| New Jersey | No local sales tax, so no address lookup is needed. New Jersey charges a single statewide rate — see the NJ Division of Taxation Sales and Use Tax page. |
For any other state: check the state revenue department. We have not verified an official lookup link for that state in this article, so we have not linked one here.
Rates change, and some items are taxed differently from others, so always confirm the rate on the official lookup before you rely on it.
