Rates checked: November 2026. Rate chart: October through December 2026 (Tax Commission COPO chart, updated November 2, 2026).

This Oklahoma sales tax calculator page gives you the rate for your city. The state rate is 4.5%. The average combined rate is 9.06% (Tax Foundation, January 1, 2026), so $100 of taxable goods comes to $109.06 at that average. Your city rate may be higher or lower.

The grocery rule changes the answer most often. Food and food ingredients carry a 0% state rate since August 29, 2024, but city and county tax still applies, so a grocery receipt still shows tax.

Oklahoma sales tax rates by city

The total is always three parts: the 4.5% state rate, the county rate, and the city rate. A county or city not on the Tax Commission chart has no sales tax of its own.

Rates from the Tax Commission COPO chart, October through December 2026, updated November 2, 2026.

Some cities cross a county line, and the county part changes the total. The part of Owasso in Rogers County pays 10.05%. The part of Sapulpa in Tulsa County pays 9.367%. Use the street address when the amount has to be exact. Combined rates run from 4.5% to 11.5%, the top end being Hollis (4.5% state, 4% county, 3% city).

How to calculate Oklahoma sales tax

Multiply the taxable price by the combined rate, then add the tax to the price.

Worked example: $100 in Oklahoma City

The Oklahoma City rate is 8.625%. $100 x 0.08625 = $8.63 tax, so the total is $108.63. At the 4.5% state rate alone, $100 comes to $104.50. At the 9.06% average, $100 comes to $109.06. The average is a guide only; your receipt follows your city rate.

Worked example: $500 in Oklahoma City

$500 x 0.08625 = $43.13 tax, for a total of $543.13.

How to remove tax from a total

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A total of $108.63 in Oklahoma City, at 8.625%, gives $108.63 / 1.08625 = $100.00 before tax. Do not subtract the percent from the total. For a general reverse check, use the main sales tax calculator with the total and the rate from your receipt.

What is taxed and what is exempt in Oklahoma

Sales tax applies to most retail sales of goods you can take home, such as clothing, electronics, and furniture, and to certain services named in the law. Most services are not taxed.

Exempt from state sales tax: food and food ingredients for home use, at a 0% state rate since August 29, 2024. City and county tax still applies. Prescription drugs sold on a prescription for human treatment, under 68 O.S. section 1357(9), are also exempt. So are sales for resale to a buyer holding a resale certificate.

Still taxable at the full rate: prepared food, alcohol, dietary supplements, tobacco and marijuana products, clothing and footwear except during the holiday, and over-the-counter drugs.

The grocery rule in full

A shopping cart filled with fresh groceries in a supermarket aisle in Oklahoma.

House Bill 1955 set the state rate on food and food ingredients to 0% from August 29, 2024. The change is permanent and covers the state part only. Food for home use counts, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread, frozen food, bottled water, candy, and soft drinks. Prepared food, alcohol, dietary supplements, tobacco, marijuana products, and over-the-counter drugs do not count. A hot deli meal is prepared food, so it pays the full rate. Shops that sell mostly prepared food follow a separate rule.

Grocery example: $200 of groceries in Oklahoma City pays only the 4.125% city rate, $8.25 tax, for a total of $208.25.

How to look up the rate for an address

The Tax Commission publishes a rate chart each quarter, called the COPO chart, listing every county and city rate. The chart used here covers October through December 2026.

Find your city rate, then its county rate, and add the 4.5% state rate. That is your combined rate. A ZIP code alone can cross a city or county line, so use the full street address when the amount has to be exact. For the same check across states, see the sales tax rates page.

Sales tax holiday and rate-change dates

Oklahoma holds a sales tax holiday each year on the first Friday through Sunday in August. Clothing and footwear under $100 per item are exempt; the limit is per item, not per receipt. Accessories, athletic and protective gear, and clothing rentals are not covered. Online and catalog orders placed during the holiday count.

The 2026 holiday ran August 7-9, 2026. The holiday runs on the same rule each year, the first Friday through Sunday in August. The 2027 dates are not yet published. Check the Tax Commission holiday notice before you shop.

Rate changes: state rate 4.5% since May 1, 1990; state rate on food 0% since August 29, 2024, under House Bill 1955.

Sales tax on a car in Oklahoma

A new car on display in a bright modern dealership showroom in Oklahoma.

Cars do not use the city table. A car purchase pays two state charges at title and registration, and no city or county sales tax. The first is a motor vehicle excise tax of 3.25% of the value of a new vehicle. For a used vehicle, it is $20 on the first $1,500 plus 3.25% of the rest. The second is a state sales tax of 1.25%. Together they come to 4.5% on a new car. Tax is paid through Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator.

New $25,000 car: excise tax $812.50 plus sales tax $312.50, or $1,125.00 in total. Used $25,000 car with no trade-in: excise tax $20 + $763.75 = $783.75, plus sales tax $312.50, or $1,096.25 in total.

Registration is separate: $96 a year for a standard car in its first four years, then $86, $66, $46, and $26. Title fee $11, transfer fee $17, insurance fee $1.50. Use the official Service Oklahoma tax estimator for an exact figure before you buy. For car tax in other states, see the car sales tax calculator.

Filing and use tax

Sellers register for a sales tax permit and file returns through OkTAP, the Tax Commission online portal. Returns are due on or before the 20th day of the month after the reporting period ends. The Tax Commission sets each seller’s filing frequency, monthly or semi-annually.

Use tax applies to taxable goods bought outside Oklahoma and brought into the state for use here, at the same rate. Online orders follow the delivery address: goods shipped to a Tulsa buyer are taxed at the Tulsa rate, not the shop’s rate.
